What's the Difference?

Our enhanced eye examination is the best way to monitor the health of your eyes and to aid in the detection of eye conditions earlier than conventional methods of testing. It is also excellent for monitoring changes in patients who have already been diagnosed with eye conditions such as glaucoma or macular degeneration.

At these appointments we use a range of diagnostic equipment and dyes to thoroughly check the health of the front and the back of the eye.

The 4 Steps:

  • Imaging of both the front and the back of the eyes to monitor for changes
  • OCT scans - check for signs of eye conditions at the back of the eyes such as glaucoma or macular degeneration
  • Topography - measure the shape of the eye to detect eye conditions like keratoconus or Pellucid corneal dystrophy
  • Dry eye analysis - tear film analysis and instillation of fluorescein dye to check for signs of dry eye.

Our private patients and Eyeplan members automatically receive our enhanced test. For NHS patients it is an optional upgrade of £20 and is recommended for everyone.

Imaging

Posterior and anterior eye imaging are conducted at every enhanced eye examination.

Photos of the front of the eye allow us to keep track of any changes in the appearance of the front of the eye, including monitoring pingecula, ptyregia, blepharitis, meibomian gland deficiency and more.

Photos of the retina allow us to keep a close watch on changes in the appearance of the optic nerve, macula and fundus, allowing a better comparison of your eye health across years with direct 1-to-1 comparisons.

OCT Scans

OCT (optical coherence tomography) scans with the NIDEK Retina Scan Duo 2 allow  us to detect eye conditions and diseases earlier than typical methods of eye examination. It can be an especially useful tool in the monitoring and management of glaucoma, as well as allowing our optometrist to detect sight threatening eye conditions like wet macular degeneration early.

Some conditions we detect and monitor frequently:

  • Glaucoma
  • Wet and Dry Macular Degeneration
  • Macular Holes
  • Diabetic Eye Disease
  • Epiretinal Membranes

Topography

Topography with the Medmont Meridia Pro allows us to take a map of the shape of the front of your eye. This allows us to look for signs of corneal astigmatism, and can aid us in contact lens fitting.

Topography can also be a useful tool for certain eye conditions, such as dry eye, keratoconus, and pellucid marginal dystrophy.

Dry Eye Analysis

Dry eye is becoming more common in modern life with our increased use of screens.

To check for signs of dry eye, we will instil a painless yellow dye that does not affect your vision called fluorescien. This allows us to detect issues with your tear film. We also check your eyelids close for signs of blepharitis, rosacea and meibomian gland deficiency, which all contribute to dry eyes.

Further tear film analysis is conducted with Medmont Meridia Pro to analyse how long your tears are lasting.

This then allows us to develop a management plan to start helping with any dryness you may have.
