What is BlephEx®?

BlephEx® is a specialized procedure performed by our optometrists to actively clean the margins of your eyelids. By safely and effectively removing bacteria and debris from the eyelid area, BlephEx® addresses the root causes of eyelid symptoms, providing long-lasting relief.

This is a safe, comfortable and painless procedure allowing us to bring your blepharitis under control!

What Is Blepharitis?

Blepharitis is closely linked with dry eye, and is a chronic inflammatory condition that affects the eye lids and their glands (also called meibomian gland dysfunction)

Symptoms of blepharitis include:

  • Red eyes
  • Burning eyes
  • Gritty/sandy feeling eyes
  • Vision that is blurry, but improves when blinking
  • Light sensitivity
  • Eye lid inflammation

WHAT CAN BE DONE?

Blepharitis treatments often involve a regime revolving around treating the lid inflammation and clearing away and excess bacterial load on the eyelids.

This may include:

  • Lid wipes and ointments
  • Drops to manage the symptoms
  • Professional lid cleaning in the form of Blephex
  • Lid hygiene routines
  • Hot compresses where meibomian glands may be blocked

BlephEx® FAQs

1. Can I get BlephEx® on the NHS?

Unfortunately not! Currently the NHS do not fund any procedures for managing dry eye in a primary care setting.

2. How often will I need the treatment repeating?

Generally we use BlephEx® once or twice to bring blepharitis under control, from there it's up to you to try and maintain your blepharitis at home with lid hygiene.

3. Is it painful?

Not at all. Generally the procedure feels slightly tickly as the probe vibrates. No pain should be felt during the procedure at all. Afterwards your lids will feel very smooth and soft.

4. How much does it cost?

We charge £45 for one BlephEx® treatment.

5. Will it cure my Blepharitis?

Unfortunately not. Blepharitis is a chronic condition, and while BlephEx® can greatly reduce the impact of blepharitis in the short term, patients will need to continue with lid hygiene measures to prevent a relapse of symptoms.
